By Eppe Franklyne – Manchester United revealed that the decision to part ways with former manager Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff cost the club £16.7 million. The figure appeared in the club’s latest financial statement released on Wednesday.

The Portuguese coach lost his job in January with 18 months still left on his contract. However, United’s fortunes improved after Michael Carrick stepped in as interim manager before securing the role permanently on a two-year deal last week.

Under Carrick, Manchester United climbed to third place in the Premier League and secured qualification for next season’s Champions League. The turnaround followed a disappointing 2025 campaign under Amorim, who guided the club to a 15th-place finish — United’s lowest league position since their relegation from the English top flight in 1974.

The latest managerial payout adds to the club’s growing list of expensive coaching exits. Earlier financial figures released in February 2025 showed that United spent £14.5 million to dismiss former boss Erik ten Hag and his staff.

Despite missing out on European football this season, Manchester United recorded stronger financial results. Revenue for the first nine months of the financial year rose to £520 million, compared with £502 million during the same period a year earlier.

Broadcast income also jumped by 57.1 per cent to £64.9 million, helped by projected prize money linked to the club’s third-place finish.

The club posted an operating profit of £37.7 million, a major improvement from the £3.2 million loss recorded the previous year. Still, concerns remain over United’s growing debt, with short-term borrowing increasing to £262.5 million under the ownership of the Glazer family.
