Manholes in Port Harcourt Metropolis have in recent times been stolen away. The practice leaves the various manholes at strategic locations open and possess a threatening perspective to human and vehicular movements.
The Premier News Correspondent who visited parts of Old GRA in Port Harcourt, noticed that the majority of the manholes have been removed and opening produces stench to the environment.
A resident in the area simply identified as Nnamdi said “the people who are the suspect of manholes theft are the scavengers who operate at night.”
Scavengers are people who go about with sacks or wheel barrows looking for objects to recycle and sell. Their most common places are waste sites and junk parks.
In recent times, activities of scavengers appears to have extended to the private residence of citizens in Rivers State.
When our correspondent contacted the office of the Rivers Ministry of works, they declined comments noting that government was already on them matter.
