Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially handed over the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who now assumes office as the Acting National Chairman of the electoral body.

The transition took place on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. Yakubu, who led the commission for nearly a decade, urged commissioners and directors to extend their full cooperation and support to Agbamuche in ensuring a seamless administrative transition until a substantive chairman is appointed. Agbamuche, the longest-serving National Commissioner in INEC, takes over at a crucial time as preparations for upcoming off-cycle and local elections intensify.

Appointed in 2015 by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, Professor Yakubu’s tenure witnessed several landmark elections, including the 2019 and 2023 general elections. His leadership was marked by major electoral reforms, the introduction of the BVAS technology, and increased emphasis on transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Details of the official transition and future plans of the new Acting Chairman are expected to emerge in the coming days.
