Mbongeni Ngema, a South African who wrote the screenplay for the Whoopi Goldberg picture Sarafina, has died at the age of 68.

According to the New Telegraph, he was a passenger in an automobile that was in a head-on collision when he tragically passed away.

Ngema was murdered in a head-on collision while returning from a funeral he had attended in Lusikisiki, South Africa, according to a statement released by his family. He was riding along in the car.

The legendary musical Sarafina!, which powerfully depicts the Soweto uprising in South Africa and the sufferings of young black students during apartheid, was written and directed by Ngema.

Later, the play was made into a critically acclaimed 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Leleti Khumalo.

His untimely death has left his fans, family, and coworkers in shock. The family released a statement stating, “He was a beloved brother, father, husband, and patriot.”
