39 inmates at the Gusau Medium Security prison in the state who were convicted of various offenses have received pardons from Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle.
Matawalle claimed that the intervention, which led to the detainees’ release, was a result of his administration’s compassion toward all facets of the state.
Alhaji Junaidu Aminu, the State Attorney General’s representative, revealed that the procedure began with the screening of the prisoners by a commission under his leadership sometime in March of this year.
Only offenders who had ingrained good character were proposed for the intervention, according to the governor.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the committee meticulously chose 46 prisoners from among those serving a variety of terms, including 11 people serving life sentences and five people on death row. The prisoners range in age from six months to twenty years.
Out of the screened detainees, the intervention resulted in the release of 30 with sentences ranging from six months to 20 years, nine others with life sentences, and the five prisoners on death row had their sentences reduced to seven years in prison.
The governor urged the afflicted detainees to make the most of their advantage by behaving honorably in public.
Some of the prisoners who were questioned promised to keep up their responsible behavior and to do their fair share to advance the state. (NAN)
