Nearly 40 years after making his professional debut and 19 years since his retirement, Mike Tyson is stepping back into the ring at 58 years old for a fight that has drawn widespread criticism across the boxing world. Tyson, who dominated the heavyweight division during his reign in the late 1980s, will face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in an officially sanctioned match at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Friday.
The fight, originally scheduled for July, was postponed after Tyson suffered a medical emergency during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles in May, where he vomited blood due to a bleeding ulcer. This incident has only fueled the concerns of critics, who argue that the match presents an unacceptable risk for Tyson, whose last professional bout was in 2005, when he was defeated by Kevin McBride.
Despite the backlash, Tyson has expressed confidence after a rigorous training camp. Speaking at an open workout in Texas this week, he stated, “When I agreed to this fight and started training, I thought ‘What was I thinking of?’ But I’ve finished the process. The fight is the party. All the hard work is done.”
In this unconventional bout, Tyson will take on Paul, who became famous as a YouTuber before transitioning to boxing. The fight will be held over eight two-minute rounds (shorter than the usual three-minute rounds in professional boxing) with 14-ounce gloves, intended to reduce punch power. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has cleared Tyson’s physical condition for the match to proceed.
