Mile 12 International Market was blocked on Friday; the Lagos State Government authorized its reopening on Monday.
The market was reopened following a comprehensive examination, which covered numerous aspects of environmental compliance, waste management procedures, and general cleanliness within the market, according to Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources.
He stated that matters that were vital to the public’s health, safety, and the environment could not be negotiable because the government could not stand by idly while these principles were undermined and compromised by the actions of a small number of people.
We can’t keep ignoring the state of our surroundings. We need to change the way we think about the environment.
The environment treats us in the same way that we treat it. We cannot fold our arms and let the indifference of a few influence the generality of the people.
“The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate reopening of Mile 12 International Market, following full compliance with environmental standards and safety measures previously listed as a precondition for reopening shut markets.”
“Despite numerous advocacies and public Enlightenment, the government is forced to enforce.” The enforcement effort will be ongoing, as no government enjoys shutting down markets,” Wahab said.
He advised the vendors to follow the regulations of acceptable standards, emphasizing the importance of hygiene for their own and the public’s health.
