Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the legislative body.
Her resignation follows a prolonged conflict that began in February, stemming from the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, which has since divided the assembly and the ruling party’s leadership in the state.
Announcing her decision, Meranda emphasized that she was stepping aside to protect the integrity of the House.
“I take a bow as your Speaker,” she declared, stressing that her resignation was not a sign of weakness but a necessary step for the stability of the assembly.
Before her departure, several lawmakers took turns to commend her for her legislative contributions and leadership.
Desmond Olusola Elliot praised her dedication, saying, “You demonstrated good leadership and led the House well.”
Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaiye I) also lauded her service, calling her a “heroine of democracy.”
“You came, you saw, you conquered. You are a victim of circumstance. This House is in tears,” he remarked.
Meranda made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, and her tenure, though brief, has been widely recognized for its impact.
