Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has delivered a firm ultimatum to Gianluca Prestianni, declaring that the youngster’s future at the club will be “over” if he is found guilty of racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr.
The controversy erupted during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout clash in Lisbon on February 17, when Vinicius alleged that Prestianni directed racist remarks at him during the encounter. The Brazilian winger raised the accusation shortly after the heated fixture, drawing swift attention from UEFA.
Prestianni, 20, has categorically denied the claim. Despite his denial, UEFA handed him a suspension for the return leg in Spain as investigations into the incident continue. The European football governing body is still reviewing reports and evidence surrounding the allegation.
Mourinho, who earlier faced backlash for suggesting that Vinicius’ goal celebration may have incited crowd reactions, shifted focus squarely onto standards and accountability within his squad. Addressing reporters on Sunday, the Portuguese coach emphasized that respect is non-negotiable at Benfica.
“If my player does not respect these principles, which are mine and Benfica’s as well, then that player’s career with a coach named Jose Mourinho and at a club named Benfica will come to an end,” Mourinho stated.
His remarks underline Benfica’s official stance against racism and signal that disciplinary action will follow if Prestianni is found culpable. The situation now hinges on UEFA’s final determination, which could significantly shape both the player’s immediate future and the broader narrative around racism in European football.
