MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, has revealed that the company has submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a 100% increase in service tariffs.
Toriola shared this during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, noting that approval remains uncertain due to the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
“We’ve proposed roughly a 100% tariff increase to regulators,” he said. “However, I doubt they’ll approve such a significant hike, as they are acutely aware of the current economic realities.”
The proposal comes amidst rising speculation about a possible telecom tariff hike in Nigeria this year.
Adding to the tension, Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), recently warned of a potential shutdown of telecom operations if tariffs are not increased.
Meanwhile, telecom subscribers have strongly opposed any move to raise service charges, calling for affordability in the face of ongoing economic struggles.
