A Nigerian non-governmental organization, Save the Consumers, has condemned MultiChoice Nigeria for raising its DStv and GOtv prices by 21% in Nigeria while slashing prices by up to 38% for its South African customers.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) had previously locked horns with MultiChoice, leading to lawsuits over what it described as indiscriminate price hikes in Nigeria. Despite FCCPC’s directive to suspend the increase pending an ongoing investigation, MultiChoice enforced the price adjustment on March 1, 2025.
Dr. Aliyu Ilias, Executive Director of Save the Consumers, criticized the disparity, pointing out that while South African subscribers benefit from reduced fees, additional channels, and enhanced user experiences, Nigerians face inflated costs. The group labeled this approach as “economic discrimination” and called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to curb MultiChoice’s perceived monopoly.
“MultiChoice’s discriminatory pricing, rewarding South African subscribers with lower costs and better services while exploiting Nigerians, is a glaring example of unchecked corporate greed,” the group asserted.
In a bold call for action, the NGO urged Nigerian consumers to explore alternative platforms and consider boycotting DStv and GOtv until MultiChoice rectifies its pricing policies.
