The manager of Bayern Munich, Julian Nagelsmann, avoided a ban but received a sizable fine on Wednesday for his “unsportsmanlike” remarks to the officials during his team’s 3-2 defeat against Borussia Monchengladbach.
As a result of the 50,000 euro ($53,200) fine imposed by the German FA (DFB), Nagelsmann is allowed to take his spot on the bench for the top-of-the-table home match against Union Berlin on Sunday.
The DFB claims that Nagelsmann has already accepted the sanction.
After the final whistle blew in Gladbach on Saturday, Nagelsmann went into the referees’ dressing room, prompting the DFB to launch an investigation.
Nagelsmann reportedly used foul language when confronting referee Tobias Welz after a questionable red card decision against Dayot Upamecano early in the game reduced Bayern to ten men.
As he left the room, Nagelsmann referred to the authorities as “spineless” and said, “That’s a joke, they’re taking the piss.”
The Bayern manager later expressed regret and acknowledged having “gone too far,” but he insisted the dismissal was unfair.
On Germany’s Sport1 network on Sunday morning, Welz justified his choice and insisted that he and Nagelsmann had no animosity toward one another.
No slurs were exchanged despite the emotional nature of the conversation, he claimed.
With 43 points, Bayern and Union are tied with Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga standings, with Bayern leading on goal differential.
