In order to prevent such incidents, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to take immediate action by compensating the victims of the mistaken bombing of more than 40 herdsmen in Nasarawa state’s Doma local government area and holding guilty personnel accountable.
Chief Tony Ojukwu (SAN), the Executive Secretary of the Commission, made the appeal in a statement released in Abuja over the weekend in response to media reports alleging that the Nigerian Air Force had mistakenly bombed civilians, including herders. He also condemned the purported bombing.

The NHRC Boss continued, “While we urge the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Military to ensure Justice and Compensation to the Families of the Victims, the NHRC will, in line with its mandate, monitor the development and seek the Protection of Victims’ Rights as well as the Payment of Compensation for the Lives and Properties Lost as a Result of the Unfortunate Incident.”

In order to prevent the problem from worsening, Ojukwu urged the impacted people, especially those in Nasarawa state, the location of the tragic bombing, to maintain peace and quiet and refrain from using force.

In the same way, he prayed to God for the victims’ souls to rest in peace and asked Him to give their loved ones the strength to endure the irreparable loss as part of His boundless mercy.

In a similar event, the Commission has voiced alarm on the recent killing spree in the South East, where renegade gunmen have been mercilessly murdering innocent people.

In order to allow the southeast to return to its former peaceful status and embrace dialogue and forgiveness, he said, “We are calling on the various security agencies and well-meaning individuals and groups in the southeast to appeal to all aggrieved persons and armed groups in the southeast to lay down their arms.”
