Between June 2022 and June 2023, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) detained 999.33 kilogrammes of drugs in Jigawa.

This was announced by Mr. Mu’azu Aliyu, the Jigawa state commandant of the agency, on Thursday during a press conference to recognize World Drug Day 2023.

He added that throughout the time, the command detained 409 males and 13 females out of a total of 422 suspected drug dealers.

Aliyu added that the command helped 186 drug addicts and obtained 94 convictions.

Four people were still receiving rehabilitation at the command’s rehabilitation center, the commandant added, even though 15 people had already received treatment.

“As part of preventive measures,” he stated, “the command in the past year embarked on War Against Drug Abuse Campaigns at motor parks, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the state.”

In addition to praising the command’s officers for their commitment to duty, Aliyu urged them to intensify their efforts to prevent drug usage and addiction, particularly among young people.

The commandant denounced drug traffickers’ attacks on its employees in the state and issued a warning that the agency would no longer stand by while its officers were killed or seriously injured.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the United Nations designates June 19 to June 26 each year as World Drug Day to raise awareness about drug addiction and illegal trafficking.

“It is a day of utmost importance to the global community in the continuous effort to ameliorate the consequences of abuse of illicit substances and make our world a safe place,” the commander stated in reference to World Drug Day.

Because it recognizes the significance of taking a people-oriented approach to drug policies, with a focus on human rights and evidence-based methods, giving priority to prevention, and leading with compassion, the subject is distinctly historic.

This underlines the necessity for our society’s deep empathy, assistance, support, care, and understanding for those who struggle with substance use disorders.

In order to combat drug misuse and illicit trafficking, he added that the command was boosting its partnerships with other pertinent parties, such as the media and the international society of substance abuse prevention specialists.
