The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has strongly condemned the recent bomb explosions in Maiduguri, describing the attack as barbaric and a direct assault on innocent civilians.
The explosions reportedly occurred around the Monday Market axis and near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State, claiming several lives and leaving many others injured.
Emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene following the blasts, which reportedly detonated at about 7:02 p.m. on Monday. The Federal Fire Service confirmed that its personnel were mobilised to assess the situation and assist victims.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ndume expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the attack as cruel and unacceptable, particularly as it targeted densely populated public areas.
The lawmaker, who is currently in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah, said the incident was heartbreaking and extended his condolences to the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, families of those who lost their lives, and the victims currently receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
He said the tragedy had brought immense pain to the people of Borno State and the nation at large.
“I cannot begin to imagine the pain and burden on our Governor at this moment. This is a deeply heartbreaking situation for him and for all of us. May Allah grant us comfort, strength, and healing,” Ndume said.
The senator also commended the swift response of security agencies and emergency responders who moved quickly to manage the situation and provide assistance to the injured.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents across the state.
Ndume further urged residents of Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, particularly as the Eid celebrations approach.
“I urge all residents, not only in Maiduguri but across Borno State, particularly in Borno South, to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. We must not let our guard down at this critical time,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has raised concerns over the possible deployment of multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri by suspected Boko Haram elements.
According to the military, the coordinated attacks targeted crowded public locations, including the Post Office area, Monday Market axis, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The military said the attacks appeared to be aimed at causing mass casualties and spreading fear among residents.
Security authorities disclosed that at least 23 persons were killed in the attacks, while more than 100 others sustained injuries.
Ndume concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, while wishing the injured victims a speedy recovery.
He also called for unity among residents and urged Nigerians to continue supporting security agencies in the fight against insurgency and terrorism.
