Cross River State has recorded a new COVID-19 infection involving a 53-year-old Chinese national. The patient, who works for a large company in the Akamkpa area, reportedly fell ill shortly after arriving in Nigeria in mid-March. Health officials confirmed the diagnosis after testing the man at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, stated that the patient is currently recovering well. He reassured the public that there is no need for panic, as the state is fully prepared to manage the situation. Dr Ayuk emphasised that the government is committed to identifying and treating any COVID-19 infection quickly to prevent it from spreading further into the community.

Because the patient had been in the country for several weeks before showing symptoms, health experts worry he may have caught the virus locally. This COVID-19 infection is the first confirmed case in the state since 2022. Consequently, the State Epidemiologist, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, has already deployed rapid response teams to the victim’s workplace to begin contact tracing. This process helps identify anyone who might have been exposed to the virus.

The World Health Organisation is also working closely with local authorities to monitor the COVID-19 infection. They remind everyone that while the global emergency has passed, the virus is still present and requires cautious prevention. Officials are focused on containment rather than just treatment, ensuring that this single case does not lead to a larger outbreak. Residents are encouraged to remain calm and follow standard health advice to stay safe.

Do you think local communities are still prepared to follow health protocols if cases continue to rise?
