Ruben Amorim, the newly appointed head coach of Manchester United, acknowledged the significant challenge ahead as he prepares to leave his successful tenure at Sporting Lisbon to take charge at the Premier League club. Amorim, 39, was confirmed as United’s new manager earlier this month, signing a contract that runs until June 2027. His appointment comes after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag.
In his final match with Sporting, Amorim oversaw a dramatic 4-2 comeback victory against Braga on Sunday, marking a fitting conclusion to his time at the club. Reflecting on his move to England, Amorim told reporters after the match, “I feel ready for the new challenge. I’m not naive, I know it’s going to be very different, very difficult. But I’m at peace now, I can focus on my new job, and I’m looking forward to starting tomorrow.”
Considered one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, Amorim will make his Premier League debut on November 24, with Manchester United set to face promoted Ipswich Town. United currently sit in 13th place in the league with 15 points from 11 games, four points behind third-placed Chelsea. Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has overseen a modest run of three wins and a draw since Ten Hag’s firing on October 28.
Amorim, who has twice won the Primeira Liga with Sporting, admitted that replicating his success in Portugal at United would be difficult, given the different pressures of managing in England. “I know it will be difficult to reproduce what I have here elsewhere, but there are other places with different exposure and pressure… It’s been a fantastic adventure,” he said. He also offered an apology for the timing of his mid-season departure, explaining that he felt the move was the right step at this point in his career.
