Comrade Joe Ajaero, the recently elected president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declared that the Congress will work urgently to establish a new national minimum wage.
He made this statement on Wednesday in his inaugural speech, which he gave after taking the oath of office as NLC President in Abuja.
At the 13th National Delegates Conference held at the International Conference Centre Abuja, Ajaero was chosen to lead the NLC.
He declared: “The NLC will pursue a new national minimum wage law with the utmost urgency that would take into account the objective realities of our socio-economic system; broaden its scope to include more workers; and create variables and thresholds for automatic adjustment of the nation’s wage floor to prevent needless politicking and impunity by our employers and lessen the suffering of Nigerian workers.
The interests and desires of Nigerian workers, and by extension the majority of Nigerian masses, are something we are firmly dedicated to achieving. We thus swear allegiance to the NLC, Nigeria, the Nigerian people, and the Nigerian working class. This avowal will serve as the driving force behind our thoughts, deeds, and breathing, my friends!
“We will work to forge a stronger bond with the Nigerian people so that we may stand stronger together as they rise up once more to carry their desires and amplify their voices.
“We will not only speak for the 133 million multifacetedly impoverished Nigerians, but we will also look for forums to help free our people from the chains of poverty. We will once more be the real protectors of the Nigerian people, crying out for them, and fighting together against all forces that lead to poverty and misery.
The labor leader declared that the NLC would consult with the Federal Government on ways to lower governance costs, eliminate excesses, and limit possibilities for bigwigs to plunder the economy.
