Babatunji Wusu –
In Lagos State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially opened the Red Line Rail Mass Transit project on Thursday.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his spouse Ibijoke, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hazmat, state commissioners, and aides had earlier met the President at the red line rail project’s inauguration.
Governors Usman Ododo (of Kogi), Abiodun Oyebanji (of Ekiti), and Dapo Abiodun (of Ogun), along with former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and other dignitaries, greeted Tinubu.
The Red Rail Line connects the domestic and international terminals of Murtala Muhammed Airport and spans 37 km, with 13 stops. It integrates important bus terminals at Oyingbo, Yaba, Oshodi, Ikeja, Ebute Metta, Iju, and Iddo.
When operating at maximum capacity, the train can carry 1.1 million passengers every day.
Sanwo-Olu stated in a Thursday morning post on his official X Twitter that the project’s commissioning aims to change the urban environment and accelerate growth in addition to enhancing the city’s mobility.
According to the governor, his administration is creating opportunity, growth, and a sustainable future by connecting key places throughout Lagos.
He wrote: “Embarking on the Lagos Mass Rail Transit (LMRT) project is more than just enhancing transit; it’s about weaving the fabric of our city into a tighter, more connected community. Every track laid, every station built, brings us closer to a Lagos where distance no longer dictates destiny.
“The LMRT project is a beacon of progress, illuminating the path to a future where our city moves smoother, faster, and more efficiently. It’s not just about the journey from point A to B, but about how each journey brings us together, making Lagos not just a place to live, but a place to thrive.”
