The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which oversees the telecoms sector, denied Airtel Nigeria’s request for administrative assignment of spectrum so that it might offer fifth-generation (5G) services throughout the nation.
The operator made the demand at the Mariot Hotel’s Stakeholders’ Engagement on the Draf Information Memorandum (IM) on the Auctioning of Additional 2 Slots of 100MHz in the 3.5GHz band. The operator claimed that by participating in the previous 3.5GHz spectrum bid round, it increased the Federal Government’s revenue.
It pleaded with the Commission to grant it the license without holding an auction.
It made the case that businesses who opted out of the procedure last year should be forced to do it this year.
However, the NCC declared that it will only assign spectrum via a fair, open, and competitive bidding process.
The Commission held off on making any comments regarding MTN Nigeria’s involvement as the sole 5G provider in the nation.
