Neymar and the other defendants in a fraud and corruption trial involving the Brazilian football player’s 2013 move from Santos to Barcelona have been exonerated by a Spanish court.
In order to avoid paying the Brazilian business DIS what it was owed as the partial owner of Neymar’s player rights, the plaintiff, DIS, had accused Neymar, his father, and the former presidents of Santos and Barcelona of concealing the price of his transfer on purpose.
A statement from the court on Tuesday claimed that “it has not been established that there was a false contract or that DIS was meant to be injured,”
Given that Spanish state prosecutors decided to withdraw all accusations during the trial, the verdict is hardly unexpected. Only the attorneys for DIS were left to present their case.
The 30-year-old Neymar had been the target of DIS’s initial five-year prison sentence request. However, as the state prosecutors withdrew, the DIS’ attorneys lowered their demands to 2.5 years in prison.
