Liverpool pre-season win continued as Rio Ngumoha scored the only goal to hand the Reds a 1-0 victory over Wrexham in New York.
Liverpool claimed their second consecutive victory under new head coach Andoni Iraola after beating Wrexham in a pre-season friendly at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. Teenage forward Rio Ngumoha proved the difference, scoring from close range in the 75th minute to spark loud celebrations from a crowd of more than 42,000, most of whom were backing Liverpool. The famous venue is home to the New York Yankees and Major League Soccer club New York City FC.
The result followed Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday, which marked Iraola’s first game in charge after replacing the sacked Arne Slot. However, that win came with a setback as defender Joe Gomez picked up an injury and was unavailable for the clash against Wrexham.
Liverpool also remained without new signing Jeremy Jacquet, while Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak were absent following their involvement at the World Cup. Before the match, Iraola said Gravenberch, Wirtz and Isak could return for Liverpool’s final fixture of their United States tour against Leeds at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, continued their pre-season preparations after narrowly missing the Championship play-offs on the final day of last season. Phil Parkinson’s team entered the match with confidence after recording friendly victories over Manchester United and Leeds, but they could not stop another Liverpool pre-season win. The Liverpool pre-season win also gave Iraola another positive result as he continues to shape his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Can Liverpool carry this strong pre-season form into the new season under Andoni Iraola?
