Nigeria has reached a new milestone in regional energy cooperation as the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), in partnership with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) Information and Coordination Centre, successfully synchronised the country’s electricity grid with the broader West African power network.

The historic test, carried out on Saturday, November 8, 2025, between 5:04 a.m. and 9:04 a.m., linked Nigeria’s grid with those of Niger Republic and parts of Benin and Togo, operating at a unified frequency with the regional grid.

In a joint statement released on Sunday, NISO’s Board Chairman, Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Bello Mohammed, described the synchronisation as a “major breakthrough” in regional energy integration efforts under the West African Power Pool initiative.

The successful operation, they noted, paves the way for a single, interconnected power pool across West Africa—enabling seamless electricity trading, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening energy security among member nations.

NISO added that the achievement underscores Nigeria’s growing technical expertise in managing complex, large-scale grid operations that meet international standards. The organisation also reaffirmed the country’s leadership in driving regional economic growth through sustainable energy cooperation.

“This synchronisation marks a historic step in regional power collaboration,” the statement read. “It demonstrates Nigeria’s readiness and technical capability to operate in line with global standards while advancing economic and energy integration across West Africa.”
