The Presidency has reassured Nigerians of the safety of recently introduced Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, an alternative to petrol cars. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, responded on Thursday to reports that Malaysia plans to phase out CNG vehicles by 2025 due to safety concerns related to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), not CNG.
“Some clarification on Malaysia’s plan…their issue relates to LPG safety, NOT CNG,” Onanuga wrote, highlighting that Nigeria’s CNG choice is both safer and cost-effective. He added, “Nigeria has adopted CNG only, based on valid safety and cost factors.”
Unlike Malaysia, which struggled with CNG adoption and tank replacement issues, Nigeria is already working to manufacture CNG tanks domestically, ensuring vehicle safety for the future.
