The 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina has officially addressed the circulating reports regarding the passing of Corporal Ude Jude. In a detailed statement released on Sunday by Captain Abayomi Adisa, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the military sought to debunk viral claims of internal sabotage and negligence, describing such rumors as deliberate attempts to misinform the public.

To set the record straight, the brigade clarified that the deceased was not a Lieutenant, as some outlets suggested, but a Corporal who joined the service in 2012. Furthermore, the incident that eventually led to his death did not take place within the military barracks. Instead, the soldier sustained injuries on February 16, 2026, while stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Funtua. According to the report, Jude had left his post to buy personal items when he became involved in a physical altercation with a civilian over a personal disagreement.

Following the encounter, Corporal Ude Jude received immediate first aid and was later moved to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre for intensive care. Despite being relieved of his duties to focus on recovering from stab wounds and trauma, tragedy struck on March 24, 2026. The soldier collapsed near his home shortly after a medical check-up and was tragically confirmed dead upon arrival back at the clinic.

The Army emphasized that they have supported the family throughout this ordeal. The Garrison Commander personally managed the funeral arrangements, including the provision of a coffin and mortuary services, with additional help from the 82 Division in Enugu. All military honors and personal effects were handed over to his next of kin in accordance with official protocol. The brigade maintains that they remained in constant contact with the family and provided security during the burial to honor his service.

Do you believe the military’s proactive approach in clarifying such incidents helps in maintaining public trust?
