Troops from the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have successfully apprehended Bako Wurgi, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, on December 14. Wurgi, also known as Bako NaGarba, is suspected of being involved in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of the Emir of Gobir in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa.
Following intelligence reports that Wurgi was receiving medical treatment in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State, for injuries sustained during a clash with a rival group, the troops launched an operation that led to his capture. During the operation, Wurgi was found with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds. Although two of his accomplices managed to escape, another individual who helped transport Wurgi via a tricycle was arrested.
Wurgi is believed to have played a key role in the kidnapping of the Emir of Gobir on July 9, 2024, in Sokoto State. The Emir was later murdered on August 22 after ransom negotiations failed. Reports suggest that Wurgi was involved in the ransom discussions, which included both cash and motorcycles, but ultimately did not result in the Emir’s release.
The arrest of Wurgi is considered a major breakthrough in the fight against banditry and terrorism in North-West Nigeria. His capture has been met with praise from residents of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States, who are hopeful that this success will help curb the violence and insecurity that have plagued the region. Wurgi is currently being held at an undisclosed location, and efforts to apprehend his remaining accomplices are ongoing.
