The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is mourning the tragic loss of Senior Correctional Assistant (SCA) Shuaibu David, who was killed while attempting to prevent a jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, on March 24, 2025.
According to an official statement by NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar, the jailbreak occurred when inmates tampered with padlocks, allowing twelve prisoners to escape. Five of the fugitives have since been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining seven.
David was praised for his extraordinary courage and dedication, standing his ground in the face of danger to uphold security at the facility. His selfless sacrifice was acknowledged by Acting Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, who expressed the service’s deep sorrow and condolences to his family and colleagues.
In response to the incident, the NCoS has intensified collaboration with other security agencies and local communities to recapture the remaining escapees. Additionally, steps are being taken to reinforce security measures across correctional centers nationwide to prevent future jailbreaks.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service remains committed to ensuring the safety of its officers and the security of custodial facilities across the country,” the statement emphasized.
