On Sunday, June 4, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) instructed its members to join the NLC protest strike in opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s elimination of fuel subsidies.

In a memo signed by Dominic Igwebike, the union’s general secretary, encouraged its members to abide by the order and halt working as of early Wednesday morning.

The sudden removal of the fuel subsidy, which NUEE claimed caused untold hardship for Nigerians and increased inflation in the economy, led to an emergency national executive council (NEC) meeting of the NLC, which was held on June 2 at the Labour House in Abuja. NUEE claimed that this decision was a result of that meeting.
