According to the Federal Government, it will take approximately 30 years of sustained investment to be able to control the current flood threat in various sections of the country.
This information was released by the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The Minister emphasized that while this kind of calamity cannot be prevented, the government can only lessen its effects. He claimed to have delivered a presentation to the Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.
He noted that while an early warning system is in place, numerous capital-intensive projects must still be undertaken in the future to prevent the effects of flood disasters. He added that this cannot be accomplished in a single administration.
He said that the current administration was already developing a master plan for flood management.
