A member of the House of Representatives representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Uchenna Okonkwo, has expressed strong optimism about the future of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that Nigerians are ready to reclaim their country.

Speaking at the ADC National Convention, Okonkwo said he felt “elated” by the level of enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by party members and supporters.

“I feel elated seeing the power and zeal that has been demonstrated by well-meaning Nigerians who understand that what we currently have u

nder the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a hijack of democracy,” he said.

According to him, the convention reflects a growing awareness among citizens that meaningful political change must begin now.

“This convention has shown that Nigerians are standing firmly with this great party. They are ready to take back this country, and that is w

hat we stand for,” he added.

Okonkwo also raised concerns about what he described as the marginalisation of some lawmakers in the National Assembly who refused to align with the ruling party.

“We in the National Assembly have been relegated to the background because we refused to join them. But with ADC, we now have a voice to fight for true democracy — not just for ourselves, but for the youth, women, and all Nigerians.”

Despite alleged threats from authorities, including concerns involving the Federal Capital Territory administration and electoral bodies, the lawmaker said the large turnout at the convention reflects resilience and determination among Nigerians.

“Regardless of the threats, Nigerians hav

e shown that this movement will stand. What you see here today is a clear demonstration of that resolve.”

Reacting to whether the ruling party feels threatened by ADC’s growing influence, Okonkwo questioned what he described as contradictions in the party’s posture.

“They claim to have 32 governors, enormous resources from subsidy removal, control of security outfits, and the support of the youth. So why are they panicking?” he asked.

According to him, the atmosphere at the convention signals the possibility of a major political shift.

“The fear is palpable. Anyone who walks into this hall can see that a big change is coming — and that change is ADC.”
