The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have scheduled an emergency joint extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting for today at 7 pm. This development comes after organized labour held a meeting with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
According to Naija News, the National Vice President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, disclosed the emergency meeting during an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja. Etim explained that the NSA provided a detailed briefing to the leadership of the organized labour regarding the actions taken so far.
Furthermore, Etim emphasized that the union leaders secured a commitment from the NSA, expressing satisfaction with the steps he has taken. In addition, he praised the NSA for recognizing that the issue at hand should not be perceived as a political dispute. Etim also mentioned that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the assault on Ajaero, highlighting how the government initially doubted the impact of the strike but was surprised when the organized labour proceeded with their threats.
It should be noted that the NLC and TUC had declared an indefinite nationwide strike on Tuesday in response to the attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other labour leaders in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, on November 1. The organized labour’s grievances include outstanding salary arrears, the wrongful classification of 11,000 employees as ghost workers, unresolved gratuities, non-compliance with the N30,000 minimum wage act, and the wrongful categorization of 10,000 pensioners as ghost retirees.
