The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a bold ultimatum to state governments, setting a December 1, 2024, deadline to implement the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage.
The NLC also accused fuel marketers of artificially inflating petrol prices, claiming the current pump prices far exceed fair market rates. In a communique following its National Executive Council meeting, the NLC decried what it described as exploitative policies driving many Nigerians deeper into poverty and hunger.
Condemning the severe economic hardship faced by citizens, the NLC called for a reversal of “anti-people” policies. It directed state councils yet to implement the new minimum wage to begin an indefinite strike on December 1 if the issue remains unresolved.
President Bola Tinubu approved the minimum wage increase in July, but implementation has been inconsistent across states. While over 20 states have adopted the wage, others lag behind, with some even pledging to exceed the federal mandate.
In response, the NLC announced the formation of a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee, which will launch a nationwide campaign to mobilize and educate workers and citizens to defend their rights and dignity.
