NLC Provides Update On New Minimum Wage: “We Are Struggling For Better Working Conditions For Nigerian Workers”
In light of the current hardship brought on by the loss of gasoline subsidies, the NLC expressed optimism that the much-anticipated new minimum wage will provide Nigerian workers with better living and working conditions.
In a conversation with leadership yesterday, Benson Upah, the head of information and public affairs for the NLC, shared his opinions. He also mentioned that while they are waiting for the government to formally form the new minimum wage committee, they have submitted a list of their members who they anticipate will be included in the tripartite committee.
In order to alleviate the hardship brought on by the elimination of fuel subsidies, labor unions in the nation, such as the NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), inked a 15-point agreement with the federal government back in October 2023.
However, several of the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding, such as the monthly salary award payment to workers of N35, 000, have not yet been fully executed after three months.
However, Upah stated that the NLC is still dedicated to putting the welfare and living conditions of Nigerian workers first despite the current circumstances.
He said, “Certainly, we couldn’t have given up on the struggle for better working conditions for workers and living conditions for Nigerians.
“We have since sent the list of our representatives to the government at its instance. We are waiting for the formal constitution of the Minimum Wage Committee.”
