By Babatunji Wusu| The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have warned that organised labour may embark on industrial action if the Federal Government fails to tackle the growing wave of insecurity across the country.

The labour centres issued the warning during a joint press briefing at the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, where they raised concerns over the increasing incidents of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping affecting workers and ordinary citizens.

According to the unions, the worsening security situation has continued to endanger lives, disrupt economic activities and create uncertainty for Nigerians in various parts of the country. They stressed that urgent and decisive action is needed to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of citizens.

The NLC and TUC stated that organised labour would be compelled to consider stronger measures, including industrial action, if authorities fail to address the security challenges confronting the nation.

Labour leaders noted that workers remain among the most affected by insecurity, with many facing risks while travelling to their workplaces or carrying out their daily activities. They argued that sustained violence and criminal activities have made life increasingly difficult for millions of Nigerians.

Beyond security concerns, the unions also addressed reports suggesting that discussions were ongoing regarding a proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage.

The labour organisations dismissed such claims, insisting that the reports do not accurately reflect the current status of negotiations on workers’ welfare and wage-related matters.

According to the unions, no agreement has been reached on the figure being circulated by some state governors, and any suggestion that discussions have advanced to that stage is misleading.

The NLC and TUC reaffirmed their commitment to protecting workers’ interests while calling on government at all levels to prioritise security and improve living conditions for citizens.
