The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced that the lifting of petroleum products from the Port Harcourt Refinery has officially begun. As of Tuesday, November 26, 2024, trucks started loading products including Premium Motor Spirit (PMS or petrol), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO or diesel), and Household Kerosene (HHK or kerosene).

This marks the successful restart of the refinery following its rehabilitation, which began in 2021 under a $1.5 billion contract with Maire Tecnimont SpA. The Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) has now resumed crude oil processing, with products being delivered to the market.

NNPC’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, described the event as a monumental achievement for Nigeria, signaling a new phase of energy independence and economic growth. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support and emphasized the significant role the refinery’s restoration will play in the country’s energy security.

Farouk Ahmed, CEO of the Nigerian Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), congratulated NNPC for the milestone and assured his agency’s continued support for the completion of ongoing rehabilitation work at other refineries.

The Port Harcourt refinery, with a production capacity of 210,000 barrels per day, is expected to produce approximately 10.2 million liters of petrol daily. The successful rehabilitation project has logged over 16 million manhours without any loss time injury (LTI).
