The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that the 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery are undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation to align with world-class standards.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, clarified that the ongoing work is not the conventional Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) previously carried out but a complete overhaul aimed at transforming the facilities.

This clarification followed remarks by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who questioned the operational status of the rehabilitated 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery and Warri Refinery. Obasanjo had alleged that the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) had previously deemed the Port Harcourt Refinery nonviable due to corruption concerns, accusing NNPCL of misleading Nigerians about the refineries’ functionality.

Responding, Soneye highlighted NNPCL’s strides in revamping the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries and confirmed that similar efforts are underway at the second Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery.

He emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to enhancing and maintaining these refineries to meet global benchmarks, ensuring sustainable and efficient operations.
