The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has elevated and installed Bala Yunusa Mohammed as its new National Chairman, signalling a bold leadership shift as political tensions intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP hailed Mohammed as an astute administrator, citing his previous role as National Organizing Secretary and emphasizing his strategic depth, grassroots connection, and unwavering commitment to the party’s ideals.
The party also confirmed and acknowledged the exit of its former chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, who resigned to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). It commended his service, noting his contributions during his tenure and wishing him well in his future political pursuits.
Describing the leadership transition as timely, the NNPP warned that Nigeria is currently grappling with crippling economic hardship, surging inflation, and deepening insecurity, conditions it says are eroding public confidence and threatening national stability.
The party further raised alarm over what it termed a systematic attack on democracy, alleging that opposition parties are being weakened through:
- sponsored internal crises
- calculated destabilisation efforts
- spurious legal battles
- and what it described as “judicial warfare”
According to the NNPP, these tactics are designed to distract and exhaust credible political alternatives ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We are witnessing a dangerous erosion of democracy where the voice of the people is being muffled through political manipulation,” the statement noted.
In positioning Mohammed at the helm, the party said it has chosen a leader equipped to confront these turbulent times, expressing confidence in his ability to unite, stabilise, and reposition the party.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man. Under the leadership of Honourable Bala, we are not just preparing for an election; we are preparing to salvage a nation,” the party declared.
The NNPP called on its members and Nigerians at large to rally behind the new leadership, stressing that the road to 2027 would require resilience, unity, and strategic focus.
“The journey to 2027 is a marathon, and the NNPP is now better positioned than ever to emerge as the party of the people,” the statement added.
