Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a prominent member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has strongly criticized the recent petrol price increase by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). He is urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restore prices to their previous levels, warning that the hike will exacerbate the hardships faced by Nigerians.
In a statement released on Thursday, Ajadi described the price increase as insensitive, particularly in light of the already challenging economic conditions many citizens are enduring. He noted that even at the prior price, many struggled to afford petrol, and the new rates would only deepen their suffering.
“We were shocked to see the sudden rise in petrol prices,” Ajadi said. “I urge President Tinubu, who also serves as Minister of Petroleum, to direct the NNPC to revert to the old price. As an economist, he must recognize the far-reaching consequences of continually increasing petrol prices.”
Ajadi highlighted the significant burden this price hike places on everyday Nigerians, pointing out that many have resorted to walking long distances due to skyrocketing transport fares. He expressed concern that escalating fuel costs would further inflate food prices and other essential goods, making life increasingly difficult for the average citizen.
“I call upon President Tinubu, elder statesmen, and the National Assembly to address this alarming decision by the NNPC,” he stated. “We cannot allow the poor to suffer further amid our nation’s resources. We must prioritize the well-being of our citizens and alleviate their financial strain.”
Ajadi, who was the NNPP’s gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 elections, emphasized the urgent need for decisive action to ease the burdens on Nigerians and urged leaders to act swiftly and compassionately.
