The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike’s aide, Lere Olayinka, has dismissed claims that Naval Officer Lt. Ahmed Yerima was the target of an assassination attempt in Abuja, describing the reports as misleading and untrue.
In a statement shared on social media, Olayinka explained that the incident occurred after Yerima was stopped by police for driving a tinted car without a number plate. According to the aide, Yerima refused to comply with standard police procedures at the checkpoint, including winding down his window and presenting identification.
Olayinka wrote: “You were driving a car without a plate number. The car was tinted. At the police checkpoint, you were stopped. You were asked to wind down, YOU REFUSED. After you eventually wound down, you were asked to identify yourself, YOU REFUSED. Instead, you were calling other Naval Officers while insulting the policemen on official duty.”
He further clarified that the police did not allow Yerima to leave until his colleagues arrived to verify his identity, and accused him of exaggerating the encounter as an assassination attempt.
Olayinka added: “So the policemen who kept you waiting until your colleagues came to identify you were the ones who wanted to assassinate you? Or was it part of an order for you to use an unregistered car and refuse to identify yourself when asked to do so by the police?”
The aide concluded by warning against spreading unverified narratives and noted that social media hype can sometimes amplify misleading stories.
This statement comes days after a video of a confrontation between Lt. Yerima and FCT authorities over a disputed land site in Gaduwa District went viral, sparking nationwide debate.
Police authorities have maintained that there is no record of any assassination attempt against Yerima and have urged residents to verify reports before spreading them online
