Veteran Nigerian actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has highlighted the urgent need for structural reforms in Nollywood, particularly concerning the absence of residual payments for actors.
In a candid Instagram post, Omotola reflected on her extensive 30-year career in Nollywood, where she has featured in over 310 films and television projects but has never received residual payments. She contrasted this with her relatively brief four-year stint in Hollywood, where, after just two test projects, she began receiving monthly residuals.
Her message resonated widely across the industry, sparking renewed conversations about fair compensation and the need for systemic changes in Nigeria’s film sector.
“Just 4 years in Hollywood. 2 test projects. Monthly residuals. 30 years in Nollywood. 310+ projects. No residuals. Nollywood needs structure,” Omotola wrote.
The actress’s comments have brought attention to a longstanding issue within the Nigerian film industry, where actors and creatives often struggle for fair remuneration beyond their initial payments.
