More information has come to light on how troops from the 174 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Odugunyan in the Ikorodu neighborhood of Lagos State set fire to the Ogijo Police Station in Ogun State after mistaking the man’s identity who had slain a soldier.
Following the death of one of them during a brawl, the soldiers attacked the police station on Wednesday.
It was assumed that the man who killed the soldier was a police officer employed by Ogijo Police Station.
The soldiers only realized too late that the suspected soldier killer was not a policeman as assumed, but a Legionnaire who was dressed in clothing that resembled mobile police uniform after the dust generated by the murder and attack on the station had cleared.
The soldier’s killer is not a police officer, according to a police source.
“He is wearing a legionnaire’s uniform.
The soldiers therefore believed him to be a traveling police officer.
“The legionnaire sought to rob the cyclist who was transporting the soldier of his money.
“Trouble began when the soldier, who was wearing a mufti, refused to allow the legionnaire to collect money from the rider.
“Due to his attire, the legionnaire gave the soldier the impression that he was a traveling policeman.
“They got into an argument that turned into fighting.
The soldier was stabbed by the legionnaire who had a jack knife in his possession.
