NUJ Akwa Ibom Raises Security Concerns Over Influx into Eket

NUJ Akwa Ibom has urged security agencies and local authorities to strengthen monitoring of people moving into Eket Local Government Area, citing growing public safety concerns. During its June congress, the union expressed worry over the rising number of commercial motorcyclists, scrap metal traders and scavengers entering the area.

Furthermore, NUJ Akwa Ibom called on the Nigerian Immigration Service and other regulators to improve profiling and enforce existing laws while respecting citizens’ constitutional rights. The union also urged the judiciary to speed up criminal trials to ease congestion at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre.

Meanwhile, Congress asked Eket authorities to regulate open cow skin processing because of environmental and health risks. It also condemned the harassment of journalists in court premises and demanded stronger protection for press freedom.
