NYSC Political Campaigns: Nafiu Warns Corps Members Ahead of 2027 Elections

NYSC Political Campaigns could land corps members in trouble if they use their identities or social media accounts to promote political parties and candidates ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, issued the warning during a visit to the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course in Katsina.

Nafiu told corps members to stay politically neutral throughout their service year. He stressed that they must not take part in partisan campaigns or use their NYSC status to support political candidates.

He warned that corps members who breach the rule could face disciplinary action. In particular, he urged them to think carefully before posting political material on social media.

The NYSC boss also raised concerns about misinformation and artificial intelligence. He said AI tools can now create convincing photographs, videos and other digital content that may mislead the public.

Therefore, he urged corps members to verify information before sharing or reposting it.

According to Nafiu, corps members should check where information came from. They should also establish when an image or video was created and determine whether someone digitally altered it.

The warning comes as political activities are expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. As a result, corps members will need to exercise greater caution online and offline.

Nafiu also reminded them that the NYSC has an important role in Nigeria’s electoral process. Many corps members are expected to serve as ad hoc election personnel during the 2027 polls.

Consequently, maintaining neutrality will be important to public confidence in the electoral process.

The NYSC director-general urged corps members to protect the integrity of their service by avoiding partisan politics and responsible use of social media.
