Former President Olusegun Obasanjo took an 18-kilometer walk around Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, yesterday as part of the Baptist Boys High School’s centennial celebrations.
Obasanjo led current and former students, as well as the leadership of the Old Boys Association, led by Prof. Kayode Oyesiku.
During the walk, the former president, whose presence drew a large number of admirers, dazzled residents, motorists, and passers-by.
According to Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, hundreds of residents praised and echoed Obasanjo’s name for his “prowess, energy, and endurance” in embarking on the walk despite his age.
Obasanjo and his team were hosted by the Olu Ibara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade, former Finance Minister Onolapo Soleye, and the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.
Obasanjo was also joined at Alake Palace by some of his old schoolmates.
They walked through Oke Egunya, Igbore, Oke-Igbein, and ended at Oba Omolade’s palace in Omida, while singing the school anthem and other songs.
They then relocated to Soleye’s home in the Ibara Housing Estate.
Following his visit to Alake, the octogenarian proceeded to Saje, the school’s hosting community.
The route took them through Isale Ake, Adatan, and Kugba Road before entering the school grounds via the rehabilitated Saje Road.
“The walk covered an 18km stretch when added together,” Oyesiku said.
He praised Obasanjo for his enthusiasm for the centennial commemoration.
