Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has reached out to U.S. President Joe Biden with a formal request to remove Cuba from the list of countries designated as sponsors of terrorism.

In his letter, dated September 3, Obasanjo highlights Africa’s historical debt to Cuba, acknowledging the island nation’s significant role in fighting colonialism and apartheid.

Obasanjo’s letter, reported by Arise TV, reads:

“Dear Mr. President,

It is with great pleasure that I address you in my capacity as the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a position from which I have consistently championed peace, justice, and the well-being of nations.

I am writing to draw your attention to Cuba’s current status on the United States’ list of countries supporting or sponsoring terrorism. Through my experiences and interactions with the government and people of Cuba—particularly during and after the era of Fidel Castro—I have come to deeply appreciate Cuba’s invaluable contributions to the fight against colonialism and apartheid in Africa.

I respectfully urge you, President Biden, to reconsider Cuba’s inclusion on this list. The designation adversely affects millions of Cuban citizens who are unjustly suffering as a result.

I trust that you will give this matter the compassionate and empathetic consideration it deserves.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

Yours sincerely,

Olusegun Obasanjo”
