Outgoing Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of borrowing between N2 billion and N5 billion to finance the upcoming inauguration of their incoming governor. Obaseki, speaking at the inauguration of a 10-member caretaker committee of the state’s PDP in Benin City on Friday, said his administration was sidelined and not invited to the event.
Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC candidate who won the September 2024 election, is set to be sworn in on November 12. Obaseki claims that the incoming government has already started tapping into the N27 billion his administration allocated for ongoing projects and state obligations.
“In this holiday period, they’re spending as much as they can to confuse people, trying to shift public perception,” Obaseki remarked, adding that the borrowed funds for the inauguration are being pulled directly from state reserves.
Obaseki assured the PDP supporters that he would continue to support the party’s cause, promising to help reclaim what he called the party’s “stolen mandate.” He stressed that allowing the APC to retain power would undermine democracy in Nigeria.
