The Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, paid a visit to internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Abagana camp in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Sunday to celebrate 2022 Christmas Day with them and express solidarity with their five-year displacement by suspected herdsmen.
In his address to the IDPs, Obi encouraged them to be patient and to look to God for help, saying that he shared their sorrows and losses, thus his choice to attend them on a day when many families exchange affection.
He also urged the Federal Government to resettle the IDPs so that they may resume their lives.
Earlier, Governor Samuel Ortom, who greeted Obi at the Government House, stated that several presidential aspirants had visited Benue but have shown no empathy in visiting the over eight IDP camps to share in their suffering.
Ortom believes that if a leader like Obi is given the mandate of Nigerians in 2023, he will improve the country’s fortunes.
Obi then went to the Abagana IDP camp to celebrate Christmas with the IDPs who have been staying there since 2018.
Some IDPs expressed their excitement and requested speedy resettlement.
In his address to the IDPs, Obi urged the Federal Government to resettle the IDPs, stating that the next government will not accept her citizens living in IDP camps.
