Tragedy struck on Thursday in Ore, headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, as a commercial motorcyclist, identified as Isah Ibrahim, was murdered and his body dumped inside a deep well by yet-to-be identified assailants.
The Nation learnt that the deceased, popularly known as an okada rider, was attacked behind the stadium axis along Okitipupa Road in Ore after conveying a passenger to the area.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers dispossessed him of his red Bajaj motorcycle before killing him and throwing his remains into the well.
One of the witnesses, who pleaded anonymity, narrated:
“The incident happened after the motorcyclist carried a passenger to the stadium side. The assailants allegedly killed him and dumped his corpse in the well. Nobody knows their motive, but many suspect it was for motorcycle snatching, which has been rampant in this area.”
The discovery of Ibrahim’s corpse in the well caused panic in the community, with residents and fellow motorcyclists trooping to the scene in shock.
A security source in Ore confirmed the killing, disclosing that detectives had commenced a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The incident has heightened tension among okada riders in Ore, who lamented the increasing attacks and killings of their colleagues by criminal gangs.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, also confirmed the incident. He, however, said details were still sketchy as investigation had just begun.
He said:
“Yes, the incident happened, and our men have commenced investigation. The details will be made public as soon as possible.”
Residents of Ore have called on security agencies to step up patrols in the town to forestall further killings and restore confidence among commercial motorcyclists.
