Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has strongly condemned the recent assault on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the incident as a dangerous escalation of internal political conflict.

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the governor expressed sympathy for the affected ADC members while denouncing what he called an attempt to destabilize the state’s peace. He declared that Edo would not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants under the guise of political activities.

“As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity,” the governor stated.

Okpebholo, who serves as the Chief Security Officer of the state, vowed to prevent Edo from becoming a battleground for political rivalry. He argued that the attack appears designed to tarnish the state’s image and undermine its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful regions.

“While the precise motive behind this attack remains unclear, I strongly believe its primary aim is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation,” he said.

The governor insisted that no form of political blackmail would erode the support Edo residents have shown his administration. He stressed that politics must center on measurable performance, grassroots engagement, and sustained public trust.

He condemned the deployment of violence for electoral gain, warning that such conduct reflects a lack of integrity and disrespect for voters. According to him, his administration welcomes constructive opposition but will not bow to intimidation or what he described as self-inflicted attacks.

While sympathizing with ADC members, Okpebholo urged the party to avoid external accusations, suggesting that the crisis appears rooted in internal disagreements. He also appealed to residents to remain calm and refuse to allow the incident to stain the state’s hard-earned reputation for peace.

“Edo remains a peaceful state, and that legacy must be preserved,” he affirmed.

In a stern warning to opposition groups, the governor advised political parties to resolve internal disputes before organizing public events. He warned that any attempt to incite violence under political cover would face decisive action.

Okpebholo further directed the police and other security agencies to heighten surveillance around political gatherings to forestall further escalation. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Edo State.
