On Thursday, Nigerians will gather at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State to commemorate the Lekki Massacre and #EndSARS demonstrations’ second anniversary.
Over the course of two weeks in October 2020, thousands of young people organized and marched through the nation’s major cities as part of the #EndSARS movement, demanding an end to decades of police brutality and other forms of injustice.
The purpose of the anniversary is to honor the memory of the unarmed civilians who were killed by state agents at the Lekki Tollgate on October 20, 2020, while they were sitting on the ground singing the national anthem and waving the national flag.
Public leaders have disclosed that, despite the shrinking public space for protests under President Muhammadu Buhari, the second commemoration will mostly take place at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos and other places across the nation as residents congregate.
